George Washington Carvery by John Perry

George Washington Carver by John Perry

In case you missed it by the title, this book is dedicated to George Washington Carver's life. From birth to death, this book gives glimpses of seldom taught information about George's life. We all know about George Washington Carver and peanuts, and many of us know about him being an important scientist in his day, but there is much more to his life than these basics. This book well lays out the more intimate details of George's life. As previously stated, the seldom taught information which brings his personality to life again is a paramount feature of this book.

I have reviewed another book about the life of George Washington (the president) which was very similar. The most important aspects of either book was that beyond the basic facts about either personality, it's those lesser-known facts about these characters that make them sparkle. For example, Carver wrote the following, "We have become 99 percent money mad. The method of living at home modestly and within our income, laying a little by systematically for the proverbial rainy day which is sure to come, can almost be listed among the lost arts." (taken from pg. 128) He definitely seemed to be ahead of his day! These details, left out of the classroom because time does not permit it, are again the most important factors of such a good book.

The author did an excellent job of display both Carver's fuller personality and his Christian experience as a whole. Thus, I recommend this book to anyone interested in either Carver's life, the time period, or studying a Christian scientist's life.
